Ridley Scott's The Last Duel Is Now Streaming On HBO Max

Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel is now streaming on HBO Max, just shy of three months after its theatrical debut, and hits Hulu in February. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel is now streaming on HBOMax. Starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, Adam Driver, and Ben Affleck, The Last Duel is a period-set drama told in Rashomon-style fashion regarding a real-life duel that transpired in medieval France. The duel, which is a result of trial by combat, takes place after a squire (Driver) is accused of raping the wife (Comer) of another knight (Damon). The Last Duel, based on the book by Eric Jager, was adapted by Damon, Affleck, and Nicole Holofcener. Released in October 2021, The Last Duel was a box office failure, even though it fared well critically. Grossing just $30 million worldwide from a $100 million budget, the film suffered theatrically, but was also up against much bigger contenders, including the latest James Bond film, No Time To Die, as well as Venom: Let There Be Carnage, both of which did far better at the box office. Director Ridley Scott proclaimed that The Last Duel failed due to lack of attention from the Millennial generation. Now, The Last Duel is getting another venue to be showcased in, as the film has surprisingly dropped on HBO Max, which is currently streaming the film on the platform. The 20th Century Studios film (released by Disney), was released on HBO Max due to “an amended agreement between Disney and WarnerMedia” (via The Wrap), which stipulates a 10-year agreement (signed in 2012) that 20th Century Fox films in the Pay 1 TV window (first window of time in which a film can be licensed to play on pay TV) would debut on the channel/streamer. The deal is unlikely to be renewed, however, as Disney will assuredly push future titles to Disney+ or Hulu. However, audiences can catch The Last Duel now on HBO Max and on Hulu starting February 23. Scott also released House of Gucci in 2021, which fared slightly better at the box office, pulling in $127 million globally. Scott has been outspoken of late, defending both The Last Duel and House of Gucci from criticisms, be it due to box office, authenticity, or general opinion. The prolific director is set to begin production this month on his next epic-scale film, Kitbag, a biopic about Napoleon Bonaparte starring Joaquin Phoenix. From there, Scott intends to helm a sequel to his Best Picture-winning Gladiator, which will focus on Lucius, the child of Connie Nielsen and Russell Crowe’s characters. Frequently, movies that bomb at the box office find a new life on home video and streaming, and The Last Duel will almost certainly do the same. While Scott has a myriad of hits in his resume, he also has lesser-seen films that didn’t fare so well at the box office, but have since found new life with audiences who discovered his work much later.
