Invasive species ‘hitchhiking’ on ships to Antarctica BBC News

Species from around the world that are "hitching a lift" on ships threaten Antarctica's pristine marine ecosystem.

That is the conclusion of a study tracking research, fishing and tourist vessels that routinely visit the otherwise isolated region.

Any marine species that can cling to the hull of the ship and survive the journey to Antarctica could pose an invasive threat, including mussels, barnacles, crabs and algae.

@river nile bank nya om But Nicole did not call me a biatch. Do you see the difference? Again and again: I’m not going to pay for your sourpuss being just because you were born in the wrong body. No way, no how. And since I know that insecure people NEED to have the last word: Your turn to reply. I DO have a life. Adiós!

    Yakutsk Life says:

    Tom Waller says:

This is true. But as airports are not exactly going to be any better, best leave as is. I think tourist numbers must be capped by a global agreement now.

    bltzcstrnx says:

@Tom Waller capping tourism will make its price skyrocket. Fine for the rich but bad news for the less fortunate from lower income countries.

    Repent OfSins says:

please turn your life to Christ whilst you still can the rapture is about to happen anytime soon please repent of your sins And invite the holy spirit to make his home inside you it’s not about religion its about a relationship

    Tom Waller says:

I served on the RRS Ernest Shackleton in the 2003/04 Season. Ballast water was exchanged at sea and biosecurity measures were taken on all shore leave personnel going on the ice even back then. Some days going out on the main deck, the pristine beauty seen would cause me to forget the reason I was walking on the main deck to check ventilation and heating systems as the ships Electronics Technical officer and Electrician. One of our missions was to dismantle Heritage UK base camps and take everything back to the ship for safe disposal outside the Antarctic region and restore the base camp environment to nature. During that trip, the whale fishing base of Gritvicken was also restored almost back to nature with only the Church and post office museum remaining for the tourists to visit and get their passports stamped. That cash is a valuable income for further research. I took over 4300 digital photos of that trip.

@Toxic Aristotle you can write the longest drivel to convince yourself that you are achieving something worthwhile in life but you will still wake up an utter failure in life even tomorrow. Still giving yourself a thumbs up eh?

@river nile bank nya om says the guy who need mantra to succeed in life. Well, you must living a worthwhile life. That’s why you need mantra

    Toxic Aristotle says:

Same happened to the Great Lakes.

    Julia Naylor says:

This is nothing new, even in the great age of exploration, this happened. One of the Galapagos Islands had to be cleared out of rats as did an area of Iceland, because they are a lethal threat to birds and other animals. In the Galapagos someone also put goats on one island, and they ate vegetation that the giant tortoises needed, and they had to be removed. On one small island in the 19th century a lighthouse cat ate and hunted an entire ground dwelling finch to extinction. Ships going to protected areas need to be search for invasive species, before they get where they’re going.

Duh ! Been happening for years , epecially ballast water systems.

    colorado841 says:

Since ships stop at every port just about and this has been going on for 20 or more years ….I wonder how many invasive species are left that haven’t been transported yet but that could potentially be transported. Maybe not very many.

    Daniel Whyatt says:

I’m definitely over stricter rules on the amount of ships that can visit and where they have previously visited. I’m really surprised that there’s even much of a demand to visit Antarctica anyway. We’ve got plenty of documentaries to show us what it’s like anyway and it’s not like you’re visiting the luxurious Caribbean. All you’re going to see is snow which you can get in many other locations along with perhaps some penguins. Really it doesn’t feel like the amount of people visiting is worth the cost to the environment.

    Mohammad Tayyar says:

Or imagine a destructive species being shipped out of antarctica …

    Kenny Liu says:

Not all so-called invasive species can survive the extreme cold climate. However, global warming could be changing that

    Wolf Maxwell says:

If animals that move due to climate are invasive, human beings must be at the top of that list.

    Bb Mm says:

Humans can recognise the damage they may be causing certain environments and control for that, animals can’t.

    Wolf Maxwell says:

@Bb Mm but will humans, armed with this knowledge, stop?

    JOMOL JOSE says:

Everyone knows that every organism depends one other for their livelihood. The earth is not our own, it is also for our future generation. So, threats to Antarctica’s pristine species also a threat to all over the world especially in this climate dialogues are going on. Always world remember, Antarctica is the last pristine coast on the earth.
