I live 2 blocks from where it happen and let me tell you it’s heart breaking! I blame the NYC dept of building because when it’s cold the landlords are only required to provide heat the money requirement is 65% and people are forced to buy space heaters! Unfortunately this fires can be prevented if people can have thermostat to control their own heat! Right now is 18F outside and my room is 50F freezing my hands off! I feel for those people! It’s a truly tragedy!

    Praise The Sun says:

How is a landlord being a slumlord the fault of the city?

I figured you’d be pissed at the landlord first and foremost.

Back in the day the slumlord that owned this place could just be tarred and feathered.

Today I’m sure there is a literal maze of BS paper corporations claiming all different types of ownership for this place. Specifically to hide slumlords like this from ever facing consequences for their ill gotten wealth extraction.

    Gabriel Amaya says:

This building suffered from neglect for way too long. It belonged to billionaire Rubin Schron who was given a $25 million state loan for repairs and upgrades on the building in 2013 by his close friend state assembly speaker Sheldon Silver. Afterwards the building still recieved dozens of citations for vermin infestation, many fire hazards, faulty elevators and malfunctioning fire alarms that happened with such frequency that residents had to ignore them and scalfolding that didn’t meet safety requirements. In 2019 the building was sold as part of a $166 million deal for 8 rent regulated buildings by three wealthy investment firms, one of wich was co-founded by Eric Gropper, pne of the people in the mayors transition team.

    Ross Kneebone says:

Hmm, I speculate, from the info,
money could well have been flowing both ways?

Who could say? Doubtless we’ll see from the official enquiry into why the incident happened and who gets the blame.
